Safe, reliable, and affordable water starts at your tap
Each year, communities across the country recognize Drinking Water Week, observed this year from May 3–9, to celebrate the importance of drinking water and the professionals who ensure it is safe and dependable.
Local water agencies are committed to providing high-quality drinking water that meets or exceeds all state and federal standards. Teams of operators, engineers, scientists, and field crews work around the clock to treat, test, and deliver water safely to homes and businesses.
Customers can learn more about their water quality by reviewing their agency’s annual water quality report, also known as the Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). These reports include a summary of water sources, testing results, and regulatory compliance information. Local agency reports are available from:
- Coachella Valley Water District CCR
- Coachella Water Authority CCR
- Desert Water Agency CCR
- Indio Water Authority CCR
- Mission Springs Water District CCR
- Myoma Dunes Water Company CCR
For most residents served by public water systems, tap water is a safe, reliable, and cost-effective choice. Drinking water from the tap costs just pennies per gallon, while bottled water can cost 300 to 2,000 times more.
Choosing tap water also helps protect the environment. The production and transportation of single-use plastic bottles require significant energy and resources. It can take more than a gallon of water to produce a single plastic bottle, and many bottles take hundreds of years to break down. While recycling is an option, only a small percentage of plastic bottles are ultimately recycled, with many ending up in landfills or oceans. These plastics can also contribute to microplastic release into the environment.
Bottled water can be useful in emergencies or when safe drinking water is not available. However, more than 90% of Californians have access to safe drinking water directly from the tap, making reusable water bottles a smart and sustainable choice for everyday use.
During Drinking Water Week, residents are encouraged to stay informed, reduce single-use plastics, and take advantage of the safe, reliable water available right from their tap.
Behind every glass of water is a team of dedicated professionals working to protect public health and ensure a dependable supply, making it possible for communities to trust the water that flows from their taps every day.
