The relationship of irrigation and pruning is a close one. The amount of water applied directly affects the amount of pruning needed. Overwater, and growth can be too lush and succulent. Underwater, and plants become stressed, reducing healthy growth and inviting attacks from pests and diseases.

Deep watering at the plant’s drip line places moisture deep in the root zone. It can be provided by an irrigation schedule that takes into account the size of a plant and its root system. Trees in turf areas without drips or bubblers often have problems related to surface roots, and lack deep roots to provide stability and resistance to heavy winds. In these turf area locations, it’s recommended to water slow and deep.
