October is a great time to add new plants to your landscape. As temperatures begin to cool in the Coachella Valley, newly planted trees, shrubs, and other landscape plants can establish their roots with less stress from extreme heat.

Choose native or desert-adapted plants that are well suited to your yard’s sun exposure and soil conditions. Before planting, make sure the soil is moist and that your irrigation system is set up to deliver water directly to the root zone.

New plants will need regular watering while they become established, but many desert-adapted varieties can require less irrigation over time than thirstier landscape choices.

A little planning and planting now can help create a healthy, water-efficient landscape for seasons to come.
