Earth Day takes place on April 22, but conservation always matters. Changing small water habits all year long can make a big difference. Here are some easy tips to help you save water – and the planet!
Inside
- Take shorter showers. Pick your favorite 5-minute song and try to finish up before it ends.
- Turn off the tap while washing your hands and brushing your teeth.
- Defrost food in the fridge instead of under running water.
- Collect the water you use for washing produce and use it to water plants.
- Only wash full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine. Or, if possible, set the load size on your washing machine to match the amount of clothes.
- Check near pipes and appliances, such as dishwashers and water heaters, for puddles that could signal a leak.
- Upgrade to efficient toilets and appliances. Ask your water agency about rebates.
Outside
- Watch the weather! Remember not to irrigate during or after 48 hours after rainfall, or while it is too windy.
- As the weather turns warmer, water your landscape in the early morning and late evening to reduce evaporation.
- Install a smart controller to adjust irrigation for you. Check with your water agency to see if they have a rebate available.
- Inspect your irrigation system for leaks and efficiency. Make sure sprinklers are watering the landscape, not the pavement.
- Sweep your driveway and sidewalk instead of using a hose.
- Wash your vehicle at a commercial car wash that uses recycled water.
- Update your landscaping using desert-friendly plants. Check with your water provider for a grass removal rebate.
Saving water will also save you money! Check with your local water agency for water-saving rebates, such as toilets, efficient appliances, irrigation controllers and grass removal. Get more conservation tips and resources here.
