Sometimes, it’s easy to tell if your toilet is leaking, when you hear the sound of water running or trickling. But, some leaks are not as easily discovered. As water leaks account for about 12% of water use in the average home, it’s best to occasionally check your toilets to see if they are leaking. Here is an easy way to do it.
- Start by removing the toilet’s tank lid.
- Drop about 10 drops of food coloring into the tank.
- Put the lid back on and be sure not to flush the toilet.
- After about 15 minutes, look in the toilet bow. If you see colored water, you have a leak. If not, you don’t.
