Clean, reliable water is at the heart of everything we do—from making coffee in the morning to growing gardens and supporting our beautiful desert environment. That’s why each August we join in recognizing National Water Quality Month—a time to celebrate our water resources and the steps we can all take to keep them safe and sustainable.

First launched in 2005 by the United Nations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this observance is a great reminder that everyday choices make a big difference in supporting clean water for our families, our community, and future generations.

Why Water Quality Is Worth Celebrating

Here in the Coachella Valley, we’re fortunate to have access to some of the highest quality drinking water in the nation—thanks to local water agencies’ investments in testing, infrastructure, and conservation.

Clean water supports:

  • Healthy families and safe homes
  • Thriving plants, parks, and natural spaces
  • A strong local economy, including agriculture and tourism
  • A resilient desert environment that we’re proud to protect

Everyday Ways We Can All Support Clean Water

We each play a part in keeping our water clean. Here are a few simple, positive habits that go a long way:

  1. Use fewer chemicals at home and in the garden
Choosing natural alternatives to fertilizers or pesticides helps keep our soil and water healthy—plus, it’s great for pets and pollinators too.
  2. Dispose of products responsibly
Taking items like unused medications or old paint to a proper drop-off site keeps our plumbing and waterways clear. It’s easy and it’s the right thing to do.
  3. Use water efficiently
Water-saving fixtures and mindful outdoor watering not only conserve our precious resource—they can also help lower your utility bills.
  4. Share what you know
When you talk with friends, neighbors, or kids about why clean water matters, you’re building a stronger, more informed community.

This month, celebrate the great work already being done across our Valley to protect water quality—and think about one or two small changes you might make in your daily routine.

Our collective efforts, no matter how small, help ensure that our water remains safe, clean, and abundant—for ourselves and for future generations.
