If you’re exploring career options, consider the water industry. In general, water-related jobs tend to be more stable than many other fields, even during changes in the economy. With a variety of career paths available, you can find opportunities in management, administration, operations, technical support, and engineering – depending on your interests, skills, and background.

Each water agency has its own hiring needs based on the size and complexity of its systems. Some positions may only require a high school diploma, while others may need a background in math and chemistry, or a degree such as an Associate’s or Bachelor’s.

Interested in working in field operations? You’ll need specialized training to become a certified water operator. Training is available through professional organizations like the American Water Works Association (AWWA), as well as community colleges and online programs. There are two main certification paths: Distribution (Grades D1–D5) and Treatment (Grades T1–T5). To become certified, you must pass an exam—and to keep your certification current, continuing education (CE) hours are required.

Operator certification is managed by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). To learn more about the certification process, visit their official site.
