The California Fan Palm is the only palm native to California, growing naturally in Palm Canyon and other canyons in the Coachella Valley. The trunks can become massive, reaching 3.5 feet in diameter. Large fronds are borne on long leaf stems, and the leaves are fringed with coarse white hairs.
It accepts the desert heat, but young plants prefer some shade. Occasional deep watering is recommended. Slower growing than the Washingtonia robusta, it can reach a mature height of 35 to 40 feet, and sometimes more. It can spread up to 15 feet, with a canopy coverage of approximately 177 square feet.
