The Red Bird of Paradise – or Caesalpinia Pulcherrima – has brilliant red and yellow flowers that bloom from early summer to fall. Considered a workhorse plant for the Coachella Valley, it typically grows 5 to 8 feet high and 6 feet wide, with fine-textured, almost luxuriant leaves, but can get much larger in mild climates.
Due to its stature and deciduous nature, it is best featured as a background plant. It accepts almost any soil, but full sun is required. It is recommended that the stems be cut back to about 1 ½ feet high after winter dormancy, prior to new spring growth. A yellow-flowering selection is also available. The Red Bird of Paradise is native to the West Indies. Its canopy coverage is approximately 28 square feet.
